International gold trades in US dollars per troy ounce. Moroccan souks sell by the gram, in karats. This tool bridges the two: enter the spot price and the dirham rate, and it works out MAD per gram for each karat, plus the value of a specific piece. Values update as you type.
A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams - heavier than the 28.35-gram avoirdupois ounce used for groceries, which is a frequent source of confusion. The international spot price quotes pure (24k, 99.9%) gold. To get the price of one gram of pure gold in dirhams:
Souk gold in Morocco is most often sold as 18k or 21k. The number the jeweller quotes is usually the pure-gold metal value per gram plus a workmanship premium (the "façon"), so the calculator's metal value is a floor, not the counter price. A shop selling a 21k chain will charge the 21k metal value plus labour; when you sell it back, you typically receive close to the metal value with the workmanship stripped out. That spread is the real cost of holding jewellery rather than an investment bar or coin.
This is a metal-value calculator, not a price quote. Three things sit between it and the number on a receipt: the workmanship premium (higher on intricate pieces), the dealer margin (the gap between buy and sell prices, widest on small quantities), and any taxes or hallmarking fees. For investment exposure without the jewellery spread, Moroccan savers more often use gold-linked instruments or physical bars and coins, where the premium over spot is smaller. Our explainer gold in dirhams, how to read it covers the two engines - the dollar gold price and the USD/MAD rate - that move the dirham value of gold.
